The project goal was to transform the lines of a Haiku poem into a visual booklet, highlighting the key parts of the poem, and aiding in demonstrating the meaning of the poem.
Selecting a Poem
When selecting a poem, I wanted to ensure that the poem would give me enough visual language to work with. I also needed to ensure that it wouldn't lead me to too obvious of an image to create. Keeping this in mind, I selected the Haiku by Jack Kerouac titledĀ
"The Butterfly Wings"
"In the sun
the butterfly wings
Like a church window"
Concepts
I explored several different ways of illustrating the visuals of the poem. After figuring out my direction (the final row), I continued to ideate from there.

Final Concept
The final booklet showcase the key visual narrative of the poem. Through lines, grid work, and color, the booklet conveys the meaning of the poem.

For the first line, it was easy to figure out just what should be done, as suns are frequently conveyed as yellow circles. The simplistic design creates a powerful message, without needing to take over the whole page.

After that however, the project got a little more difficult. I figured out how to portray the "butterfly wings" without outright placing an image of a butterfly on the paper. By using the B of butterfly and theĀ W of wings, it create a more cohesive image, imbedding the image into the poem.

Taking the same pattern as the W in the second line, I used the wing design and translated it into a stain glassed window visual; further explaining the visual of the butterfly's wings when in the sun- creating a stain glassed window effect. The poem comes full circle at the end, showing the effects of the sun on the butterfly.
